It started with a passion

As long as I can remember, I have always enjoyed being close to the natural world. I found my passion in gardening when my family and I moved into our first home in Long Island, NY where I turned our backyard into my first farm making my first solo food dryer, solar pod and grow frame.

My passion for farming grew as I attended annual trips to the Northeast Organic Farmers Association (NOFA) conferences, an event where organic gardeners, farmers and the public could learn about organic ways of living. It’s here where I started my advocacy for healthy living by collecting signatures for a petition to pass the first organic farming bill called the Organic Farming Act of 1982. This bill would establish a program of volunteer-experts to provide advice and information on organic agriculture to family farmers and other producers.

Scaling up

In 1995, my family and I decided to leave Long Island and move to a place where health and wellness was more of a community focus. We decided on Boulder Colorado for its beautiful mountain views, proximity to nature and potential to farm at a larger scale.

When we arrived in Boulder, I searched for land where I could farm so I could transition from backyard farming to small-scale market farming.

In 2009 I started leasing some land and began researching how to grow nutrient-dense produce based on the work of Dan Skow and Dr. Cary Reams. My first farm’s name was Deep Nutrition Farm. I was able to start selling at the Boulder Farmers Market in 2013, followed by the Boulder Saturday Market, Boulder Thursday Market, and Pears St Market in Denver in 2015.

The community is buzzing

“I have been getting beautiful nutrient dense microgreens from Walt for almost a year. I feel enormous gratitude for hyper-local access to microgreens of this quality. These little sprouts are a daily and essential component of my wellness journey.”
“I’ve been buying sprouts from Fifer Farm for a couple of years and they are always fresh and delicious. My kids will eat the whole container of sunflower sprouts in one go. SO pleased to have such nutritious food so easily – it shows up on my doorstep! Thanks for making local food so accessible, Walt.”
